'Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about UNDERSTANDING' - William Paul Thurston

Maths is a journey and long-term goal, achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time. At each stage of learning, children should be able to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of the topic and be able to build on this over time.

There are 3 levels of learning:

  • Shallow learning: surface, temporary, often lost
  • Deep learning: it sticks, can be recalled and used
  • Deepest learning: can be transferred and applied in different contexts

The deep and deepest levels are what we are aiming for by teaching Maths using the Mastery approach.

Our Curriculum Statement outlines our INTENT, how we will IMPLEMENT our curriculum and what IMPACT this will have on our Mathematicians at Chapelford Village Primary School.

Working Walls are vital tool in our teaching of Maths. Working Walls within Chapelford Village Primary School are ever-evolving as they are a vessel in modelling fluency, reasoning and problem solving but also provides another way to celebrate children's achievements through either independent or collaborative learning. Our Working Walls are there to support all pupil's learning through the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract resources whilst also being there to help children revisit and review previous learning.

Times Tables at Chapelford Village

At Chapelford, we are always pushing ourselves to create connections in maths and one way we do this in finding the relationship between multiplication and division. We have developed a programme, which takes us through each times table and its related division facts. Within class, and at home, we practise speed and accuracy of these and when we complete each we receive a certificate and times table wristband to show we have truly mastered the skill!

In Year 4 children take part in the Statutory multiplication check. Please see below links to useful websites that will help your child prepare for these assessments.

More information from the Department for Education about the Statutory Multiplication check can be found here.

Brainy Bev -

Brainy Bev is a Maths hero who helps us to structure our mathematical reasoning in order for us to ensure that we are delving into the mathematical background. Brainy Bev offers us sentence starters such as:

  • When I tried... I noticed that...
  • If this is true then...
  • This can't work because...

These help us to demonstrate our understanding of the key knowledge and skills we are exploring.

Vocab Vik -

Vocab Vik is another Maths character who helps us to explore our understanding but this time, he provides us with mathematically correct vocabulary so we can ensure we are mastering each skill. When reasoning, or simply explaining our thoughts, Vik helps us to articulate our understanding and we can begin to make links to other skills.
